Welcome to Advent
Each year the season of Advent begins with readings centred around the theme of ‘hope’. But we need to be careful here that our understanding of hope is not too sanitised and saccharine. In our commercialised, social-media context, we might expect to hear people talking about ‘hope’ in relation to their secret Santa Christmas party, or the weather forecast for a planned beach activity.
But for many of our Act for Peace partners throughout the world, hope is not simply about wishful thinking or sentimentality. Hope is a powerful thing. A dangerous thing. It is the imperative for change and a catalyst for the coming Kingdom of God.
Our reading this week tells us to Be ready -because we do not know the day or time when Christ will come. We are urged to live for and discover hope when you can’t see it. This is the topic we will explore on Sunday and look forward to seeing you and your family here to welcome in this special season of the Christian year.

Wow! Just wow! People packed into every corner of the property, wonderful music emanating from not one but two stages and a wonderful array of incredible, ethical stalls. What an incredible role for us as a church community – hosting and encouraging the wonderful work of so many people attempting to make the world a better place.
There were so many highlights. Notable was a young girl who spent over an hour sorting waste, recycling and compostable material with a pair of tongs, a stall who sent a volunteer home to buy more stock after they sold out half way through the market and also the young couple from a significant distance who gave hours of their time in response to a Facebook request for volunteers. There were of course many less tangible yet deeply powerful wonders – the various connections made between like-minded individuals, the education offered to the broader community around sustainable practises, waste management and ethical trading, (did you know, that for the entire market, we failed to fill one small roadside rubbish bin of waste? Truly an incredible effort!) and also the gathering of community around shared values and the celebration of life lived towards a common purpose.
Whilst all this was happening, we were of course also having fun and appreciating joy of music and creativity and amidst it raising over $1,000 for Foothills community and their work with disadvantaged, homeless and adversely affected people in the hills.
An incredible inaugural market folks! The team anticipate running again next year and already have dreams of what could emerge. We look forward to furthering the invitation to us all living and buying ethically and to participating in the spreading of justice, sustainability and equality.
